On July 6, 1956, Cleveland's Jim Bushby became the seventh player in baseball history to hit grand slams in consecutive games. The 1950s saw a huge spike in the number of players who hit at least 200 home runs; there were more than five times the amount of players who accomplished this feat in comparison to the 1940s. The home run became a resurgent piece of Major League Baseball offenses. The decade also hatched the careers of some of the most well-known players in the history of baseball—many of whom were prolific power hitters. Both MLB.com and Baseball-Reference.com list Lou Montañez's debut as April 28, 2008, in a suspended game that was subsequently resumed and completed on August 25, 2008.

These games have resulted in other MLB single-game records due to the extreme offensive performance. Mark Whiten tied Jim Bottomley for the most runs batted in in a single game with 12 in his four-homer game. Shawn Green hit a double and a single along with his four home runs for 19 total bases, an MLB record.

In that same year as well, there was another guy who played his first full season. Barry Bonds was spectacular for many seasons before he ever used steroids. Were it not for the money and limelight players like Canseco, Sosa, and McGwire got, he'd probably have never used them at all. The same could be said for quite a lot of the others who used and abused performance-enhancing drugs .

With just a few weeks left in the college season, it seemed likely that the batting average for Division I baseball in 2021 will be the lowest since the NCAA switched to metal bats in 1974. But from 2007 to now, the MLB strikeout rate has risen steadily to rates that the game has never seen before. As pitchers throw progressively harder and learn how to better design and sequence their pitches, they are missing more and more bats. These days, MLB hitters are striking out in 24% of all plate appearances. Ruth became the first player in Major League history to hit 400 home runs, posting a career-high 60 dingers in the legendary '27 season.

Ted Kluszewski broke out as a big-time power threat in his fifth full season with the Reds in 1953. His 40 home runs that season opened a stretch of four straight seasons with at least 35 bombs, and he also made the All-Star team and hit better than .300 each year. During that stretch, he hit the third-most home runs and had the fifth-highest average (.316) in all of baseball.

When a switch-hitting power hitter comes to bat, whether its on the right or left, and hits a home run, a unique situation is created.
